Drunk Future History

No Moods, Ads or Cutesy Fucking Icons ·

Yeah, I know about Intermediate stages in the origin of metabolism at a phosphorylating hydrothermal vent. I’m aware that Cortical Labs has built a head-cheese server farm in Singapore, and even of that two-year-old paper back in Nature claiming that language is not so important to thought as some have claimed. I’ve been wanting to blog about all those things. So am I talking about any of them today? Is that why I’m here?

Nope.

More tub-thumping.

It’s bound to die down soon; the official release date for Fold Catastrophes is only six days from now, and these things tend to decay exponentially with time. But in the meantime I do have an actual launch to announce, right here in meatspace. If you happen to live in or around Toronto, and you’ve got nothing better to do on the evening of September 22, you could always drop by Bakka-Phoenix[1], grab a chair and some free cookies, and have a listen. Not just to me (although I imagine I’ll be expected to read something, probably from the previously-unpublished story. Or maybe “The Wisdom of Crowds”). Robert Charles Wilson is gonna be there too. You know, that Charles Wilson. Spin Charles Wilson. Stephen King is a Fan Charles Wilson.

Of course, it’ll still be all about Me. We’ll be having “a conversation”. You’ll be getting “a Q&A”. Normally I’d say something grumpy like if anyone shows up, but of course people will show up: it’s Robert Charles Fucking Wilson.

That’s imminent future. There’s also recent past, online events to which I alluded previously but which were, back then, still on the horizon. My conversation with Shane Simonsen on Recombination Nation (cheerfully but not inaccurately entitled “Evolving Beyond Hope”) has since gone live, as has my somewhat more rambunctious appearance on Rosen & Clink’s Wizards and Spaceships. (with the almost too-coincidentally counterpointy title “Are We Having Fun Yet?[2]”) And while it hasn’t yet appeared in public, I’ve recently sent something off to Scalzi’s Big Idea feature. Tachyon tells me it’s welcome there; personally, I’m still half-expecting the dude to decide it’s not a good fit for the franchise. We’ll see.

Go listen. Come feed. In the meantime I have more interviews to deal with, a bunch of cats to feed, and some jacket text to mock up.

I tell you, it never ends.
