i want to see people talk to their robots. i am much more interested in seeing you talk to your robot than hearing the monovoice in your pocket drone on at me
husband says, people won't know what the monovoice is. just say sydney sweeney interviewer meme. they'll understand instantly that it's that condescension but in writing
if you're still not sure you know the monovoice, go read modern love essays. or don't, because they're annoying, but it is in fact a super interesting time capsule. it's been running weekly since 2004. it's published hundreds of individual writers. the ais tell me it's probably more like a thousand different writers. but it's all been edited by the same exact guy for the entire 20 plus years. each essay sounds the exact same way
the monovoice of the column is so coherent the editor himself couldn't recognize the ai emulation of it
in march, someone on here posted and said, hey that one from last november sounds an awful lot like ai
the excerpt picked to illustrate makes it clear, at least for those of us on this side of the internet:
> Not hate. Not anger. Just the flat finality of a heart too tired to keep trying.
> That's when I stopped fighting.
> I didn't give up. I shifted.
i don't often go to the other side of the internet. i stopped opening instagram altogether earlier this year, unrelated to but around the same time the modern love outing thing happened. all i'd see is people posting angry anti ai hate. it's mostly girls. it might be all girls actually. and their entire 30 or 40 slide diatribes on stories are all written by ai. the followers don't use ai enough to know
i don't think the modern love editor guy uses ai enough to have known either
i am unsubscribed from ventriloquism. i am not, per se, offended by the obfuscating. i don't think it's necessarily inherently good or bad. i only care if the writing is good or bad. ghostwriting is bad, and robot ghostwriting worse
you kind of always know when you're reading ghostwriting. you read it and it's wispy and empty like cotton candy. you get the sense there may have been a tablespoon of sugar to start but now they're handing you something blown out to the size of your head
you read ghostwriting and you can't help but peer over your shoulder and think to yourself, who are they talking to? it's talking past you
we like computers more than tv because we can talk back to it. to each other, and now to the robots too
sometimes i like to watch people argue with grok. a couple of months ago, lukas computer tagged grok on some guy's post, and the guy then argued with grok for hours. he replied to grok like more than 100 times. i watched it with great interest. all of it is more interesting than anything anyone's ever posted written by the ais
last year i posted a snippet of a chat convo and some people asked: how do you get your robot to talk like that?
with a couple of people, i did an experiment where i helped them get their robot to talk like they wanted it to talk. it was immense fun
my robot starts to talk different when i'm in chatboxes. i have friends working on various things i weigh in on. they paste screenshots of their chat and i paste screenshots of mine and we spitball the next round of drilling down and go off to respectively prompt and reconvene and repeat.
the prompts inevitably start to pick up on each other. the conversation rolls around like a katamari ball. things start sticking and the ais start addressing each other and riffing off one another, and also both of you
there's a book called where'd you go bernadette. it's terrible, and loathsome, don't read it. but i remain fascinated with its unusual narration device
you can think about the book like a three act play. the first act is told entirely through offgas. communications offgas. the husband works at microsoft and you learn about him by what he writes in emails back and forth to his ea. the wife is a stay at home mother, no longer working, who is slowly going yellow wallpaper. you learn about her by what she writes in emails back and forth to an ea too, except hers is offshore and virtual
i love that the story is basically told through all these artifacts. it's remarkable
i fairly frequently see posts now, where we the humans are talking to us, the other humans, in tandem with our robots. there's a couple people on here who are very good at this
every time i see one i think, man, i kind of love reading the ai writing when i get to see the contexting and the prompting. i don't want to read sublinkstackslop but i do want to read this
we all have access to all knowing now. i'm not that interested in what people want me to think they know. i'm much more interested in seeing things being figured out, and being taken along for the ride
