twarp

Development log for twarp, a faithful, protocol-first reimplementation of TradeWars 2002. Notes on the game engine, the canonical structured protocol, and the ANSI terminal client.

Engine kernel

29 Jul 2026

The backfill begins at the beginning. The deterministic substrate under everything twarp does, the journal frame, the single writer, the three clocks, snapshots, and the replay harness that makes every rule a test.

Combat and deployables

26 Jul 2026

The universe is dangerous now. The recovered odds arithmetic, the fixed sector-entry sequence, fighters and their three dispositions, mines, tolls, devices, escape pods, and the cloak.

The roadmap

22 Jul 2026

"The whole plan: the twelve epics that carry twarp from an empty deterministic engine to a deployed, playable world, what each one contains, in what order, and why that order and not another."

Ports and trading

20 Jul 2026

The second playable milestone — live port economies, the recovered haggle engine, StarDock, and the first profitable trade route flown end to end.

Turns and maintenance

20 Jul 2026

The clock runs the game now — the daily Extern as a scheduled journaled command, live turn accounting with an hourly credit, the overnight tax, and event cursors that survive server restarts.

Port flavor names

19 Jul 2026

The naming grammar recovered from the original's port name tables, the 2,405 recovered base names, and the 100 buildtall additions that join them.

The twarp dev log begins
